The Darndest Thing
It was early Archery season 2007 when I decided to hunt the power lines on the mountain I live on. I packed up my gear and got out onto the power line early in the morning well before sunrise. From where I stood I could see the lights of the town below me as people started to wake for the morning, by this time the sky was starting to brighten as more and more details of the Terrain filled my eyes. I continued to wait for the sun to come up as I spotted two doe slowly walking up the power lines towards me. One was a large doe and the other a bit younger and a bit smaller, they went slowly grazing as they moved and I kept my eyes fixated upon them.
Finally the sun crept up over the horizon and light started flooding my field of vision, the doe at this time were about thirty yards out. I slowly got my arrow notched on the bow and carefully pulled back. I took aim at the larger of the two and steadied my hands. I took a deep breath in and held for a moment. At the very moment I loosed the arrow the larger doe spotted me and saw the arrow coming her way. As time seemed to move in slow motion what I saw was a large Doe jump straight up and spin around full circle. The other doe just stood there stunned watching. As the arrow reached it’s intended target the doe had come back down from the jump and leaned forward. The arrow skipped across her back and shot hair up into the air. Both doe promptly ran off into the woods, I started moving down the hill to inspect the scene. As I expected it was clearly not a clean shot as I spotted the arrow first, but what I didn’t expect was to see the tail of the doe lying there beside it. I guess there is a first time for everything, including shooting the tail off of a deer.
